Flipside Flame 2009, Issue 3
good news and bad news
Which do you want first?
It’s pretty easy. Good news first.
We did not have to implement a random selection policy to select from equal requests. Some ticket requests were sent back for the various reasons but everyone who correctly submitted requests got a ticket.
So the bad news is pretty mild by comparison.
Ticket pickup postponed
There was a printing issue so the ticket packets are not ready yet. That means that the ticket pickup party won’t happen for a few weeks while that gets sorted out.
The new
date to pick up your tickets will be
Wednesday, March 25th.
But wait, there’s more good news.
Ticket mailout still on schedule
Those of you too far away to come visit to pick up tickets should be unaffected by the printing problem. Tickets packets are still on target to be assembled and mailed out the week of March 16th.
Yeah, but Did I get a ticket?
That news you’ll have to go check for yourself. Go to www.burningflipside.com/tickets
Sign in and check your “Request Status.” If you see a status of “Request Accepted” then you will receive your ticket(s).
If you got any other status, send an email to t ickets@burningflipside.com with your ticket request id for further assistance.
Can I still Bring my Kids?
It’s not bad news, only a new legal hoop to jump through. If you’re bringing minors to the event, please make sure that you bring their ticket and proof of legal guardianship. (Your Survival Guide insert will have more details about approved methods of proof of guardianship.)

Hello from the Earth Guardian
Greetings, fellow citizens of Pyropolis. I have a message for you about what it means to be a Leave No Trace (LNT) event. Sounds pretty self- explanatory, right? We leave Flat Creek Crossing the same or better than we found it, so that there is no trace of us having been there.
Education to reduce the environmental impact of recreational use on land started in the 1970s. In 1990 the United States Forest Service and the National Outdoor Leadership School developed a national LNT education program that now has formed partnerships with the Bureau of Land Management, the National Park Service, and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. The LNT ethics are summarized in 7 principles described below, along with some tips of how to practice these principles as Flipizens.
- Plan Ahead and Prepare – Read all the materials provided in your Survival Guide, the Flipside Flame, and on the Burning Flipside website. Use second-hand materials for your camp or, if you are using virgin materials, plan for them to be reusable and eco- friendly. Make sure your camp can sustain Texas Hill Country conditions, which can include heavy rain and wind. Remove unnecessary packaging. Bring drinks in crushable cans or plastic bottles rather than glass containers. Try to reduce the weight and volume of the waste your camp generates – use reusable cups and water bottles rather than disposable ones. Encourage visitors to your camp to BYOM (bring your own mug). Remember, the less waste you generate, the less you have to take home with you!
- Travel and Camp on Durable Surfaces – Reduce vehicle impacts on the site – drive on marked roads and park in designated spots when you finish unloading your camp.
- Dispose of Waste Properly – Do not MOOP. Leave nothing behind that does not normally occur in the Texas Hill Country, including fruit peels, ashes, cigarette butts, and seemingly “minute” things such as matches. Pick up trash and properly dispose of it, even if it’s not yours. Separate your waste; bring your recyclables to the recycling station— less trash for you to pack out. Don’t pour anything but water on the ground.
- Leave What You Find – Do not claim any artifacts. Take only what you brought or things voluntarily given to you.
- Minimize Fire Impacts – Know whether there is a burn ban in effect. Even if there is not burn ban, do not start ground fires! Use burn barrels or other contained fires instead. Never leave any fire unattended! If you are planning on having a fire, bring fire extinguishers and know how to use them. Do not burn anything toxic and don’t throw anything unnecessary such as bottles or lighters into the fire. Fire spinning is only permitted in designated areas. If there is a burn ban, no fires will be allowed at all.
- Respect Wildlife – Do not harass any wildlife – it is their territory we are encroaching on. Remember that pets are not allowed at Flipside.
- Be Considerate of Other Visitors – Be courteous neighbors; we are all part of the Flipside community. Talk to fellow Flipizens about LNT practices if you think they could use a refresher. Also consider this: many gifts end up as trash – offer a smile or a helping hand instead.
With a camping event of this size, some principles of the LNT practice are bound to get bent or violated, but it is all of our responsibility to reduce our impact as much as possible by reducing our footprint as much as possible, serving as an example and role model for other groups using the site throughout the year. Stay tuned for more eco tips to follow in the Flame, and thanks for your attention!
Your Earth Guardian,
Claudia

Moolah-lah
The decisions that go into the budget for Flipside are myriad. Not only are the many needs for the current year estimated, but needs for the community’s future must be considered. We would love for the budget pie to look like this:
But this is more realistic.
What goes into those pie slices?
Some are boring but unavoidable things like event insurance and fuel costs. Some expenses bring year-round community, like warehouse rent or events like decompression and the town hall meetings.
