The Future past That Never Was: The Privateer Airship Isabella
From the desk of Sky Captain Greyhawk
Captain of the privateer airship Isabella
Greetings to all you freakish darlings
It has come to our attention of a great safari being held in our fair land. I have decided that after much traveling and adventure the crew of the privateer airship Isabella needs some well deserved time off. So we have made arrangements to set down on the upper field and establish our camp and partake of this grand safari. After much traveling we have found and obtained wonders from around the world, Art, Music, and treasures of untold wonder. We would like to share them with our friends, so to this end we will be hosting a Masquerade ball aboard the Isabella (See below for details). So we would be honored to have you as our guest aboard for a night of mystery, dance and exotic adventure.
What if the industrial revolution had not come for another 200 years? And Steam was still the primary source of energy and inventors still ruled the technological world? To find out, the world of Steam punk has come to life. The Theme camp The Future past that never was is going to bring a taste of that wonder us word to Flipside 09. So dust off your top hats and pull down your goggles and come play in our world.

Critter craze
Hurry, hurry! Step right up!
Who wants to build an animal?
We have plywood and jigsaws. All we need now is YOU and YOUR animal (real or imaginary)!
Contact: lenell@gmail.com for more info on building a work of burnable art for this year’s event.
We will be building these on non-DaFT days (DaFT folk can play too). Contact Lenell for a date to open up the warehouse and build a critter.
Out of town participants are also welcome to build critters and bring them to the event. Let me know if you live in the outlands and are planning on making wooden animals for the event so we can include them in the procession.

Leading the way
Are you a Freak Leader? Do you want to be? Want to be better?
On Saturday April 11th, Jack Miller, a prized community resource, will be giving his leadership seminar. We recommend area facilitators, area leads, theme camp leads, and those who would like to be attend. He focuses specifically on the special quirk of leading Freaks. Why bother? How to do it? What you should never, ever do if you want to succeed?
I promise it’s worth your time. If you’re interested in attending, please email volunteerinfo@burningflipside.com asap.
In 1983, the photographer and conceptual artist Tseng Kwong Chi gathered a group of his friends in his studio. They were artists of every sort, photographers, dancers, painters, fashion designers, drag performers, and musicians (in fact, most of them were involved in many different types of art). They were dressed in their flamboyant best, prepared for another night of shaping New York City’s downtown club scene with their antics.
Before leaving for the night, Tseng Kwong Chi had them pose for a group portrait. He titled it Puck Ball (The Gang’s All Here).
In the photograph, we the ties of friendship and joy that exist between its twelve subjects. The sense of happiness is palpable. Even Chi, whose photography and other art usually focused on subject of alienation and otherness, becomes a member of the group here.
Twenty years later, this photograph was chosen to be in the traveling collection The Downtown Show: The New York Art Scene 1974-1984. It served as a sort of thesis for the collection--that at that time and in that place, artists of every sort were friends and collaborators, and they enhanced each other’s lives as well as their art.
I saw this photograph when The Downtown Show was on display at the Austin Museum of Art, and instantly felt pangs of recognition. A group of artists and friend, creating together and truly enjoying life was something that I knew first hand. It was my experience with my circle of friends in the Austin Burn community.
With that in mind, and as a tribute to Mr. Chi, I staged a photo shoot to recreate Puck Ball. I called together a group of friends to Meet at the warehouse on a busy Saturday afternoon, and in that place where so much art is created, as we were prepared for a night of partying, we posed for a photograph. We took both a more literal recreation, with poses similar to the original photograph, and a spiritual recreation, capturing the idea of a group of artists and friends in a moment of joy.
Each of these people have been an inspiration to me, and I have no doubt that their greatness will shine through in all that they create in their chosen art. This art project is my statement to the world that what we have here is truly special.
