Flipside Flame 2009, Issue 10

Delia
Flame2009-10

Dearest Flipside Community,

The LLC has been informed by the owners of Flat Creek Crossing that due to this year’s drought conditions, and due to the potential fire hazard posed by burning our effigy in these conditions, that we will not be permitted to burn The Freak at Flipside next weekend.

The property owners are aware that Blanco County is currently not under a burn ban. They are aware that there is a chance for rain this week. Despite those considerations, they must take into account not just the safety of the people at Flipside, but the safety of their neighbors and the surrounding lands that would be affected if a drifting ember started a brushfire. Given these conditions, they are not willing to take that risk.

This will come as a blow to many of us. The property owners shared their sympathy with us because of the love and respect they have for Flipside and our community over the past three years.

The LLC trusts in our community’s resilience and our community’s passion. Flipside will still happen. Our community will still gather Sunday night around the effigy we have built and charge the night with the energy that only Pyropolis can generate.

A burn ban and Red Flag conditions have always been in focus for DaFT’s plans this year. Though we cannot burn The Freak, Demon Monk and DaFT have planned an interactive event to stoke our community’s inner fires before spinning us off into our evening to celebrate our community and the art we create.

We believe that the creativity of our Pyropolis citizens will charge the days and nights of Flipside in spectacular ways, no matter what our environment throws at us.

Sincerely,

Austin Artistic Reconstruction, LLC

Greetings!

The Pod People are coming for you! If you arrive on Thursday or Friday this year, be prepared for PODS! In addition to main greeters, there will be three satellite stations to help greet people in as fun and efficient a manner as possible. You can identify a pod by it’s stripey umbrella, its animal-print podium and its eager greeters!

The key to navigating the pods this year will be going until you’re told to stop! The first pod will be up the hill from main greeters. There will also be two pods down the road between main greeters and parking. Remember, the road at Flipside is ONE WAY!

Warning! Cars that have already been greeted may be coming back around to park, so look both ways before crossing and make sure you are holding hands with the nearest adult!

Information Stations

New This Year: Information Stations will help participants find out what’s going on, where to find it, and how to get home.

The main station will be located on the hill next to the Grove with a message board, chalk board, map and a listing of events. Several smaller stations will be located throughout the city with a map and an events guide. The stations were inspired by Burning Man’s What/Where/When guide, without the forest of paper.

Fierce Fire

From the belly of the beast we come marching to the beat

Pounding pavement, creating subsonic frequencies

We hum melodies, chants, mantras

Speaking a new tongue, a new meditation

Bruised hands from tapping out rim shot rhythms

And beating our war drums

The prophets and wise men warned you

Through many seasons, even more moons

We were coming

A new warrior arises

Burning like the grandfather fire, a fierce passion

The flames held by frigid palms piloted through the night

No star lit sky

Wearing feathers, beads, and bones

These locks symbolize loyalties made long ago

We cease at nothing

Rode into your life by way of visions and words

This is what you see, that is what you heard

Art is enduring, contouring to pain

Our stream of conscious captures your attention

And you needed miracles to believe

Heal the blind so they might see

Well this one

This one is for the sorrows of those who lye their souls upon these stages

In a final attempt to make you listen

Where was your faith before now?

See, they wrote their lives away

Locked behind doors of determination

Swore there would be more time, more turquoise skies, more life

Poets, don’t grip the pen so tight

While telling stories of things seen in the shadows

Hear, listen, we know

You are the soldiers left to tell the tale

Legends who fight silence

You burn

Like the grandfather fire, a fierce passion

And a new warrior arises!

Tha Real Deal

Hey! Have you heard that Burning Man has chosen a Temple design from right here in Austin? Our very own Community Art Makers (perpetrators of the Resolution Clock Project downtown this New Years and a couple of Flipside Effigies) will be bringing some Texas to the playa this year in the form of a 12,000 square foot temple, complete with a 30+ foot tall fire tornado in the center of the building! Thankfully, Burning Man provided the skrilla for all the materials to do this. Unfortunately, they did not pay to feed the crew, supply the tools necessary to make it go, and help get us all out there. :( So, all things being equal, it’s Fundraiser Time!!!

Hi! I’m not Troy McClure, but you’ll remember me from such memorable fundraisers as “Rocket Casino Night”, and “Casino Night 2”. This Time, it’s Flammable! Save the Date: Saturday, July 4th at the Flipside Warehouse! Exciting times are upon us. While you’re freaking out over Flipside, we’re already freaking out over Burning Man, which includes throwing a kick ass summer party with music, drinks, all manner of fun (Shoot the crew with Roman Candles!!!!) and Super-Mega-Wow Surprises!!!!!!!! More exclamation points than you can handle!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Bamboozled

The Freaktactular Safari Procession will proceed!

It will help fortell the awesome activities planned in place of the Burn.

Get your bamboo noisemakers from the two Musical Art Cars that will be serenading the Procession masses early Sunday evening. If you’ve got other instruments, bring them along also or make some.

The transporter aspect of personal notes placed in the bamboo noisemakers won’t occur this year, maybe next year.

Stowaways Walk the Plank

Ho me hearties! All good pirates know what happens to stowaways; they’re forced to walk the plank! It’s no different at Flipside. Any land-lubbing dogs found stowing away in any vehicle will be ousted from the event. As a matter of fact, the poxy swab who stashed the stowaway will be driven off by sword point, too. But wait...the pen is mightier than the sword, so instead the old salts manning our gates shall draw forth their pens and mark the tickets of those who did the stashing VOID! And all stowaways and those scurvy bits of shark bait that stashed them shall be tossed back into their ship’s boat, asked to point their prow away from our fair ship Flipside and be sent off to feed to fishes. Yar! Contact Rangers if there is a Stowaway issue.

Call for Altoid Tins

Got any empty Altoid tins or the like? Bring them to Flipside! Drop them off at the Recycling Station. We will decorate them and put them out for people to grab and carry around with them for use as ash trays or whatever else they made need 4x2ish inch containers for. So bring us your tins!!!! Thanks!

Hot off the presses:
Safe and Sane Sunday Volunteers!

DaFT spent months designing it, building it, assembling it. You played on it, swung on it, danced around it. Help an exhausted DaFT crew topple it.

Regrettably the Hill Country environs won’t allow us to burn The Freak this year, but he still must come down! Can you dedicate your skills to a sober and attentive Sunday afternoon? Are you a careful individual who can follow direction? (Helps if you’re good with tools.) Help deconstruct our most central art piece in preparation for its grand (if flameless) finale. For details, contact volunteerinfo@burningflipside.com before Wednesday evening the 20th or sign up at the PVC stand in the grove onsite.

Still haven’t volunteered?

Well, why not? If you find yourself onsite and have a few hours to kill, why not do it helping out? Stop by the PVC (Pyropolis Volunteer Conscription) booth in the Grove and we’ll put you to work! It might even be helping to run the PVC booth :) See y’all on the Flipside!

PVC WANTS YOU!

Everyone knows that in today’s tough time economy, not everyone has the means to volunteer before getting onsite to help. Well, Pyropolis Volunteer Conscription, Flipside’s onsite volunteer booth, is still looking for a few connectors to help people looking to help onsite get connected with people who need help! Come aid in making sure that no one goes volunteer hungry this Flipside! Interested? Email volunteerinfo@burningflipside.com
