This would be a society that embraces not the rigid, sternly controlled police states of the past, but one that combines the desperate struggle to survive with a devilish, giddy desire for the kind of fun had only by twisted children who've suddenly discovered that mom and dad are gone, and they ain't never comin' back. Then the end came, and we realized it had all been an exercise in readiness.
