Sweet and Innocent City Planners Need Help

Thank you so much for reading about our plight. We, few, sweet and innocent city planners are nearly overwhelmed with the tasks set forth by our big mean bosses. While they gallivant about Europe, we are forced to continue on, nonetheless.

Woe.

Emily our devoted City Signage lead slaves away, crying at her solitude, Sundays at Lloyd the Warehouse to make city signs. Won’t someone come and help her? Sunday afternoons. Contact her for more details: www.burningflipside.com/contact Or to help install signs on site: wiki.burningflipside.com/wiki/CitySignage

Molly, our fresh recruit the Flagging lead role, is wondering if anyone will help her? Help the poor dear out, and sign up on the wiki: wiki.burningflipside.com/wiki/Flagging or contact her here: www.burningflipside.com/contact

And don’t forget Bonnie, your Theme Camp Liaison. She always wants to hear from theme camps when things change so we can try to accommodate them while we still can. After a while it gets harder to do that, and that makes us so sad. Keep in touch with Bonnie here: www.burningflipside.com/contact.

Work Weekend III

yo yo yo, it is that time again…

Work Weekend III is almost upon us! April 20-22. We will be doing more road work, and are looking for experienced skid steer operators! If that is you, please sign up below! Even if you are not inclined to do road work, we’ve got plenty of other items to tackle. Poison Ivy, Ants, downed tree limbs, etc. We need YOU to make this go.

Also of note, Safety side will also be on the land this weekend. Safety Side is held on the other side of the river of Apache Pass. Please do NOT wander over to the other side during their training unless you are signed up for some sort of training. There will be temple burn on Saturday evening that we have been invited to attend starting at 9pm. Following the temple burn, work weekend attendees may also join the guardian games.

Ticket Lead Update

Hello!

Ticket window is closed and we do not anticipate selling any more tickets.

Never fear! Since we were able to fulfill all viable requests this year, tickets should be easily obtainable.

Finding Tickets

Community involvement is one of the best ways to find a ticket.

1) VOLUNTEER! Generally people with extra tickets offer them to people who are active and contributing members of the community. Even if you have never been to an event, this is a great way to meet people and connect with a spare ticket.

2) Come to church night at The Warehouse or camp fundraisers! There will be many people at these events who will either have tickets or be able to connect you with someone that has an extra. Find out more at www.BurningFlipside.com/warehouse

Ticket Exchange

Every year tickets become available for sale as people realize that they or their friends will not be able to attend the event. Fortunately, there are many ways to find tickets. At this time, there are two secondary market outlets:

  1. Facebook page Central Texas burn event ticket and rideshare group.

  2. Texas Ticket Fairy

We strongly encourage everyone seeking tickets to pay only the original ticket price of $132 per Adult ticket, $132 per Teen ticket (ages 14 to 18), and $40 for Kid ticket (ages 7 to 13), and $0 per Child ticket (under age 7), as scalping goes against the spirit of the community and this event.

If you acquire a ticket, please be sure that ownership is transferred to you. Register your ticket at www.burningflipside.com/tickets. Follow the directions on the ticket page after logging in. See the Ticket FAQ page for additional information.

VAS needs YOU to make a Difference!

Hello, Flipizens! This is Peep, your friendly neighborhood Volunteer Assistance Squad’s fearless leader!

Have you ever been volunteering, and had the realization that sometimes it’s hard? It’s hot and you’re thirsty, or half of the team hasn’t shown up, or you really need to get a vat of salty limeade over to the Dafties stat and they’re way on the other side of the city? Well, fear not! The Volunteer Assistance Squad exists to help make your volunteer experience even more awesome than making Flipside go already is! We can go find and retrieve the absent-minded folk at Camp Forgetful who forgot what time it is and are missing their shifts, and help you move stuff from here to there to help facilitate volunteerism, and we pack some tasty snacks and cooling liquid to help soothe your hard-working hungry and thirsty volunteer bodies!

We also have a 311 Information Station at the Civic Center to help distribute the info to the weary questioning masses! Wanna know where Camp Drinksalot is? We have maps! Want to find out what time your shift starts? We can radio your team and find out! Have questions about doing MORE VOLUNTEERING? We’ve got the info!

But… we need your help. The Volunteer Assistance Squad needs more Flipizens to join the cause and Help Us Help You!

Sign up for one (or more!) of our fun three-hour shifts at https://wiki.burningflipside.com/wiki/Volunteer_Assistance_Squad and you’ll get to:

    • Drive the golf cart and loudly encourage Flipizens to help out, megaphone-style!
    • Be the smartest one at the 311 Information Station, because you have all the answers (and a radio for those phone-a-friend moments)!
    • Wear a fancy VAS t-shirt!
    • Help make Flipside go by greasing the wheels of volunteerism all over Pyropolis!

If you have questions about the Volunteer Assistance Squad, feel free to get in touch with me on this page: http://www.burningflipside.com/contact

Thank you to all our hard-working volunteers! You can be one too! This event doesn’t happen without YOU!

Shaven Apes

Do you like helping people build things and looking for folks in need of assistance? Sign up to be an Ape!

Be someone’s hero! Shaven Apes are the helping hands of Pyropolis. We help hold poles, bang stakes, and, in the case of last year, lay a lot of hay.

Our shifts are 3 hours long and you get to be a part of art projects, theme camps, and have an inside look at what folks are doing or have brought out this year.

We are not a safety department, so new event attendees can volunteer. If you have a friend coming for the first time and looking for a great way to participate, send them our way. Shaven Apes wouldn’t exist without volunteers. Sign up for a shift today!

Sound right up your alley? Contact us!

Come Chill in Parking!

We’re going out of our way to make things AWESOME for everyone who visits parking, and even better than AWESOME for people who work there.

Sign up and come make art, collect swag, park cars, and in between you can hang out at the parking beverage tent and drink cold water while having a cool mist sprayed on you with a nice breeze from the fans while eating frozen grapes.

There will be painting and other crafting materials available.

The more friends you bring, the more fun to be had! I would love to see more theme camps sign up for shifts and leave with brand new art.

2018 envelope art

Decorating your envelope when you send in your ticket request is totally optional, but totally awesome. It would be difficult to do justice to all the great envelope art we received this year—this is just a smattering. Click on an envelope to see it full size with credit; you can navigate through the gallery with arrow keys or swipes.

Community Safety Issue: Help us find and fix our missing stairs

We are the members of Austin Artistic Reconstruction, LLC, the legal entity that produces Burning Flipside.

There was an influential essay titled The Missing Stair written in 2012. If you haven’t read it, it’s one page long and worth a look.

The author likens the missing stair to a known predator within any community (social, work, religious, club, etc.). Everyone knows about the problem with the staircase, so new community Members are informed / warned. “Oh yeah, I almost forgot to tell you, there’s a missing step on the unlit staircase with no railings. But it’s okay because we all just remember to jump over it.”

This is obviously not a good way of dealing with a problem, even in a small community, but it’s completely unworkable when applied to the Texas Burn Communities, including Flipside’s Community.

One problem is that not everyone in this community knows about the missing stairs. There are many thousands of people participating in burn events in Texas throughout the year, including new Community members who have never been to an event. Burning Flipside has more than 2,000 attendees alone annually.

Additionally, no single person in the Texas Community knows all the broken stairs across Texas. So even if someone is known to you, your circle of friends or another event’s organizers, they’re not known to every event and everyone in the larger community. Predators take advantage of this.

Lastly, you may think, since these problems are known to those around you, that a report has already been made. You may think “everyone talks about what a problem that person is, surely someone has made a report already.” Unfortunately, that’s not likely. And even if you know someone made a report, AAR welcomes multiple reports about the same person.

We need your help.

The members of Austin Artistic Reconstruction, LLC do not take action based on rumors or hearsay. If you had the misfortune of “missing a stair” or witnessing a person having this experience, AAR will not know about it until someone tells us. We want to fix it, but we can’t until we know about it.

We recently published our Interpersonal Incident FAQ, which describes the process.

The process always begins with a firsthand report.

To make a report, contact us via e-mail <llc@burningflipside.com> or speak to us one-on-one.

Ticket request opening update

Envelope art by Shanna Post

Ticket opening happened today, supervised by our illustrious Ticket Lead, Loribug. Things went smoothly thanks to plenty of volunteers. Everyone who submitted a valid request will receive a ticket code in a few days. There may still be a few special-handling cases to work out, and as always there were a few invalid requests that will not be ticketed (paid with personal check, sent payment without request form, etc).

It was a privilege to see all the amazing envelope art. We got photos of a bunch of it (although we could barely scratch the surface), and once they’ve been processed, they will go up on the website.
