VAS needs YOU to make a Difference!

Hello, Flipizens! This is Peep, your friendly neighborhood Volunteer Assistance Squad’s fearless leader!

Have you ever been volunteering, and had the realization that sometimes it’s hard? It’s hot and you’re thirsty, or half of the team hasn’t shown up, or you really need to get a vat of salty limeade over to the Dafties stat and they’re way on the other side of the city? Well, fear not! The Volunteer Assistance Squad exists to help make your volunteer experience even more awesome than making Flipside go already is! We can go find and retrieve the absent-minded folk at Camp Forgetful who forgot what time it is and are missing their shifts, and help you move stuff from here to there to help facilitate volunteerism, and we pack some tasty snacks and cooling liquid to help soothe your hard-working hungry and thirsty volunteer bodies!

We also have a 311 Information Station at the Civic Center to help distribute the info to the weary questioning masses! Wanna know where Camp Drinksalot is? We have maps! Want to find out what time your shift starts? We can radio your team and find out! Have questions about doing MORE VOLUNTEERING? We’ve got the info!

But… we need your help. The Volunteer Assistance Squad needs more Flipizens to join the cause and Help Us Help You!

Sign up for one (or more!) of our fun three-hour shifts at https://wiki.burningflipside.com/wiki/Volunteer_Assistance_Squad and you’ll get to:

    • Drive the golf cart and loudly encourage Flipizens to help out, megaphone-style!
    • Be the smartest one at the 311 Information Station, because you have all the answers (and a radio for those phone-a-friend moments)!
    • Wear a fancy VAS t-shirt!
    • Help make Flipside go by greasing the wheels of volunteerism all over Pyropolis!

If you have questions about the Volunteer Assistance Squad, feel free to get in touch with me on this page: http://www.burningflipside.com/contact

Thank you to all our hard-working volunteers! You can be one too! This event doesn’t happen without YOU!

Peep

The Island Needs More Art

Got a cool piece of art you’d like to share with your fellow Flipizens, but need a little help to make it worth the effort? We got that!

Island Host, JadeRumour of BurninGlam, is the go-to person to help you transport, hang, mount, power up and light your creation. Really….what do you need?!

Currently there is space available, and Jade is eager to help display your art for all of us to enjoy. And, to making The Island fabulous!

Shaven Apes

Do you like helping people build things and looking for folks in need of assistance? Sign up to be an Ape!

Be someone’s hero! Shaven Apes are the helping hands of Pyropolis. We help hold poles, bang stakes, and, in the case of last year, lay a lot of hay. Anyone can volunteer! Sound right up your alley?

Come Chill in Parking!

We’re going out of our way to make things AWESOME for everyone who visits parking, and even better than AWESOME for people who work there.

Sign up and come make art, collect swag, park cars, and in between you can hang out at the parking beverage tent and drink cold water while having a cool mist sprayed on you with a nice breeze from the fans while eating frozen grapes. Sound interesting? Find out more here!

Burning Green

Burners take great pride in our Leave NO Trace ethos. It aligns with the Burning Flipside principals perfectly in that we all have to participate and cooperate to be accountable to ourselves, our burn and the world as a whole. Having an LNT attitude also helps the sustainability of the event in that landowners are inclined to have us back as we don’t destroy/pollute their property.

Now is the time to consider how you and/or your camp, if you belong to one, can LNT prepare. Remember if you bring it, you take it home! Here are some simple steps you can do to not only make LNT happen but make it easy.

–Until next time,

Erica

LNT: Burning Green

“As long as you are green you are growing.” – Ray Kroc

Burners take great pride in our Leave NO Trace ethos. It aligns with the Burning Flipside principals perfectly in that we all have to participate and cooperate to be accountable to ourselves, our burn and the world as a whole. Having an LNT attitude also helps the sustainability of the event in that land owners are inclined to have us back as we don’t destroy/pollute their property.

Now is the time to consider how you and/or your camp, if you belong to one, can LNT prepare. Remember if you bring it, you take it home! Here are some simple steps you can do to not only make LNT happen but make it easy.

Prepare in Advance – If you are prepared for an LNT event then a large part of the work is done. Here are some ideas and suggestions:

  • Talk about it among your campmates. Make sure everyone understands the importance of LNT. Educate the virgin burners.
  • Always consider 3Rs – Reduce, Reuse, Recycle

Have a plan to separate recyclables from trash.

  • Create and carry MOOP bags (a simple project  from Burning Man http://earthguardians.net/2016/06/03/make-your-own-moop-bag/). If you see it, pick it up, regardless if it is yours.
  • Remove as much packaging as possible. If it doesn’t go out to the event then you don’t have to haul it back
  • Use larger containers (water, food, etc.). It is easier to keep track of a one gallon water jug than 8 sixteen-ounce water bottles.
  • Grab and artify an Altoids tin (or similar) to be used as a cigarette butt holder

Recycle on Site – Separate the recyclable items but remember there is NO RECYCLING STATION in 2018. If you bring it, you must take it home!

Do regular and final MOOP (matter out of place) sweeps – Don’t let it hit the ground in the first place. However, do regular time walking in and around your camp every day looking for any MOOP. After camp is broken down, have the entire group form up into a “marching” line and cover the camp looking for that last little bit that you missed. It is easier than being called out on the MOOP map.

Lastly, the folks working on restoring the land post-event would love your help. Please come out the Saturday post-event to help bring the wooded playa back to its natural state. Watch the Flame for additional information on ridesharing, sign-ups, and other Restoration information!

As always, keep an eye on the Flipside Announce/Flame for additional LNT articles and if you have any ideas or would like to help with our Earth Guardian effort please e-mail earthguardians18@burningflipside.com or use the contact page on the Burning Flipside web page.

Shaven Apes

Do you like helping people build things and looking for folks in need of assistance? Sign up to be an Ape!

Be someone’s hero! Shaven Apes are the helping hands of Pyropolis. We help hold poles, bang stakes, and, in the case of last year, lay a lot of hay.

Our shifts are 3 hours long and you get to be a part of art projects, theme camps, and have an inside look at what folks are doing or have brought out this year.

We are not a safety department, so new event attendees can volunteer. If you have a friend coming for the first time and looking for a great way to participate, send them our way. Shaven Apes wouldn’t exist without volunteers. Sign up for a shift today!

Sound right up your alley? Contact us!

There will be painting and other crafting materials available.

The more friends you bring, the more fun to be had! I would love to see more theme camps sign up for shifts and leave with brand new art.
