Combustion Chamber Seeks New Members

Your Community Needs You!

Are you passionate about Flipside and its community? Does learning how Flipside happens sound interesting? Do you enjoy listening to/discussing/debating the finer points of Community with your friends/camp mates/fellow burners? Would you enjoy talking about crucial matters in this community throughout the year? Do you know someone else who fits this description?

The Combustion Chamber is seeking new members. Please take a few minutes to submit your application or nominate that person who would love this gig here.

But wait…what is the Combustion Chamber? The Burning Flipside Combustion Chamber (CC) is the eyes and ears of the community. Do you have a concern? Touch base with us! Wonder why something happens the way it does? Ask us. If we don’t know, we’ll find out or at least point you to the person who can answer your question. We also act as a sounding board for the event organizers (aka AAR, LLC). The CC typically meets every other Monday evening for approximately two hours, at Lloyd the warehouse.

The deadline for submissions is Thursday, April 5th, at 11:59PM CDT.

Combustion Chamber membership is not limited specifically to those that live in the Austin area, but members do need to attend meetings regularly in person. If you’re in another city, but down for a road trip every fortnight, feel free to apply.

Interested in seeing the CC in action? We welcome the participation of all Flipizens. Our next meeting is Monday, April 2nd, 7:42pm, at Lloyd the Burning Flipside Warehouse, 3106 Industrial Terrace, Austin TX.

All the best,
Burning Flipside Combustion Chamber

Community Safety Issue: Help us find and fix our missing stairs

We are the members of Austin Artistic Reconstruction, LLC, the legal entity that produces Burning Flipside.

There was an influential essay titled The Missing Stair written in 2012. If you haven’t read it, it’s one page long and worth a look.

The author likens the missing stair to a known predator within any community (social, work, religious, club, etc.). Everyone knows about the problem with the staircase, so new community Members are informed / warned. “Oh yeah, I almost forgot to tell you, there’s a missing step on the unlit staircase with no railings. But it’s okay because we all just remember to jump over it.”

This is obviously not a good way of dealing with a problem, even in a small community, but it’s completely unworkable when applied to the Texas Burn Communities, including Flipside’s Community.

One problem is that not everyone in this community knows about the missing stairs. There are many thousands of people participating in burn events in Texas throughout the year, including new Community members who have never been to an event. Burning Flipside has more than 2,000 attendees alone annually.

Additionally, no single person in the Texas Community knows all the broken stairs across Texas. So even if someone is known to you, your circle of friends or another event’s organizers, they’re not known to every event and everyone in the larger community. Predators take advantage of this.

Lastly, you may think, since these problems are known to those around you, that a report has already been made. You may think “everyone talks about what a problem that person is, surely someone has made a report already.” Unfortunately, that’s not likely. And even if you know someone made a report, AAR welcomes multiple reports about the same person.

We need your help.

The members of Austin Artistic Reconstruction, LLC do not take action based on rumors or hearsay. If you had the misfortune of “missing a stair” or witnessing a person having this experience, AAR will not know about it until someone tells us. We want to fix it, but we can’t until we know about it.

We recently published our Interpersonal Incident FAQ, which describes the process.

The process always begins with a firsthand report.

To make a report, contact us via e-mail <llc@burningflipside.com> or speak to us one-on-one.

Art Grants: Introducing Ignition Philter

Photo provided by stephy

As you may have heard, a new independent organization has been formed that is collecting contributions to provide art grants for projects going to Flipside. You will see an opportunity to contribute when you register for tickets this year. Here are some details from the director, XTC:

What is Ignition Philter?

While completing your ticket request (due January 29th! Details can be found on the Burning Flipside ticket page) you may have noticed that you have the opportunity to donate to Ignition Philter, LLC. Who is that?  We are a new organization which is working to provide art grants to our Flipside artists. Following in the fine footsteps of the Art Garden and Tinderbox, we are here to help there be more art at Flipside.

Did you know picking a name is hard?

noun: ignition

the action of setting something on fire or starting to burn.

noun: phil·ter

a drink supposed to arouse love and desire for a particular person in the drinker; a love potion.

Art isn’t free, and the Burning Flipside LLC doesn’t use ticket money to directly fund independent art projects. Ticket money is used to cover operational expenses for the event and community resources such as funding the year-round warehouse to help facilitate the creation of art. So that’s where we step in! The Flipside patrons will give money to Ignition Philter, and we will be working to get that into the hands of Flipside artists. We plan to have the application for the art grants open in February. Keep an eye out on how to register your art for placement with Burning Flipside- art registration will be open from mid-February to April 15th. Then in March we will convene an art jury to pick the winners of the art grants. Then in May at Flipside, more art!

If you are interested in receiving a grant, keep your eyes peeled  for more information soon. If you are interested in being on the art jury, please email us at ignitionphilter@gmail.com and we will also be accepting juror queries at Town Hall. Let’s art!

The ticket-request window for Flipside 2018 is now open

Austin Artistic Reconstruction, LLC is delighted to announce that the ticket-request window for Burning Flipside 2018: Return of the Shadows: 20 Years of Light and Dark is now open. You can create and mail in requests through Jan 29, 2018.

For more information on how the ticket process works, see:
https://www.burningflipside.com/event/tickets

We are also delighted to announce that an independent entity has formed that will collect contributions and provide art grants for Flipside art projects: Ignition Philter. You will have the option to include a contribution as part of your ticket request. For more information on Ignition Philter, see:
