Hello Pyropolites, Flipizens, however you fashion yourselves! What makes Burning Flipside? Why, YOU do, of course! And HOW might you do that? Pick from the following! (Pick them all!)

THEME CAMPS: Registration is OPEN! What’s this “theme camp” you speak of? Theme Camps are part of what makes a burn a Burn! They provide the unique setting where we all get to play! Learn more at https://www.burningflipside.com/event/theme-camps. Got your theme camp already planned? Get it on the map and don’t be stuck in the Badlands! Log in to and register your awesome theme camp at secure.burningflipside.com/register and follow the trail (or find the link on the Theme Camp page above). Deadline April 18th, but the sooner you do it, the more time your placement team has to work out the details!

ART: Registration is ALSO OPEN! What is art? Go to a Combustion Chamber meeting for that perennial conversation. Got art you want on the map for Burning Flipside?  Log in to and register your awesome art at secure.burningflipside.com/register and follow the trail. Deadline April 18th. You can pre-register your Art Car(t) too!

VOLUNTEERS make it go! What else makes Burning Flipside Burning Flipside?YOU! This place won’t run itself. It runs on participation, and that includes everything that marks the event go (set up, break down, and feet on the ground!), makes it more comfortable (portos and ice!), and provides needed info and support (safety teams! greeters! etc!)Learn more about volunteer opportunities and link to the sign up forms at https://www.burningflipside.com/volunteer.

COMMUNITY! By now you may have heard. Austin is in Stage 2 as far as this damn-pemic goes. What does that mean? It means Lloyd the Warehouse, the hub of our year-round community, is OPEN and Church Night has resumed. Come out on Wednesday evening to schmooze, plan, play, and enjoy each other’s company. Someone is usually there by 7 to open the building. Most activity takes place outside. Be prepared to wear your mask when inside the building, and as always, consent is important. Be respectful of each other’s space, and ask before you go in for that hug (and wait for the answer).

As always, love ya, mean it, and see you out there on the pecan playa!

Warehouse Reopening

Many of you have no doubt noticed that the Austin area has once again hit Stage 2 of COVID restrictions which means that the warehouse is open once again. That means Church Night should happen this week along with things like DaFT build nights starting up soon.
While we will do our best to announce any future closure and reopenings due to COVID restrictions we may not always be able to get an announcement out as quickly as we would like or there may be things that we don’t actually know much about like department trainings or other such events taking place at the warehouse.
So we would encourage everyone interested in attending events at the warehouse to look at this City of Austin Page: https://www.austintexas.gov/covid19. The top of the page contains a banner displaying what stage the Austin area is currently in. That is the deciding factor for when the warehouse is open or closed. So if, for example, an announcement about the warehouse opening goes out on a Monday but that website changes to Stage 3 on a Wednesday afternoon then the warehouse would be closed for church night that evening.

Arrrrrrrt!

As you (hopefully) know, the ticket window for Burning Flipside is now open. Art Registration and Department of Mutant Vehicles (DMV) Registration will open March 18th, 2022. Keep an eye out for communication from the official page/channels for updates! While we wait for tickets and registration openings, let’s talk art.

Artist Resources

Are you an artist looking for some help to get your project off the ground? Are you a community member who is passionate about art and would like to help artists get the thing done did? We’ve got you! Check out these resources:

Art Grants- Ignition Philter

The community run organization Ignition Philter is taking applications for grants for Burning Flipside bound art projects for 2022. Need monies to get your art started? The application is currently open and will close March 6th.

Ignition Philter is also looking for art jurors to help determine funding for applicants. Learn more and apply to be a juror by February 28th. Selection will be held over Zoom mid-March, so you don’t have to live in Austin in order to participate!

Don’t forget to donate! You can do so through your Burning Flipside ticket request or directly through the Ignition Philter website. If you have any questions about this organization and process, you can also reach the Ignition Philter team directly: ignitionphilter@gmail.com

Art Projects Seeking Support Page

Check out the Art Projects Seeking Support Page. It’s basically a community bulletin board where artists can ask for community assistance to help make their Burning Flipside bound art project go. Designed to help artists and community members to connect to make magic happen.

You might be an artist looking to share a brain with someone with specific expertise. Perhaps you could use some additional hands on your build. Maybe a little more money would turn this dream into a reality. It’s a great place to share a request for support or crowd source link when seeking community support.

Check the page regularly to see how your support can make art go.

The Effigy and DaFT

The centerpiece of the event is built by the community, for the community, and YOU are invited to participate! No previous build experience required. DaFT season will be kicking off soon. Get connected by emailing the team: daft@burningflipside.com

As with the event, DaFT will be enforcing the Burning Flipside 2022 COVID-19 Policy. Please be sure to familiarize yourself: https://www.burningflipside.com/2022-covid-policy

For other art related questions, feel free to email art@burningflipside.com

Happy Arting!

The Cautious return of Church Night (Part 2)

Church Night Returns This Wednesday, December 22nd for one last time this year.

The hospital admissions have behaved themselves despite the Omicron variant. So we are doing one last church night before the holidays.  With any luck, next year we’ll be able to jump right back into our weekly regimen and everyone will be sick of each other again before you know it.

Covid Protocols will be in place:

  • Masks are to be worn when inside the warehouse
  • Social distancing encouraged
  • Get consent before crossing into anyone’s personal space

We can’t wait to see your faces!

Closing for Stage 3

Flipside Participants,

We are sad to report the Flipside Warehouse will be closed due to covid again as the Austin/Travis county area has reentered Stage 3 restrictions.

All events, including church night, will be cancelled until we hit Stage 2 again.

While we understand that many of you are vaccinated and feel the risks of attending events at the warehouse are justified, AAR does not want our community to contribute to the larger community’s difficulties at this time. Hopefully, this closure will be much shorter than the last and we can see you all at the warehouse again soon.

Burner Art Safari & Virtual Burn 2021

Burner Art Safari 2021

Aaaand here we go- we have a MAP!

Poke around, click on the “flags” for titles and details of the individual art pieces. Some pieces will be available 24/7 from Wednesday May 26th to Monday morning May 31st, and some for only part of the time, some are permanent pieces that will stay on the year-round map, some have special time sensitive events listed in the notes, etc.- check out the descriptions for more info and make your plans accordingly.

You may have noticed that this map has grown and spread- once Memorial Day is over and as we slowly unwind from the pandemic, permanent pieces will stay on the map for all your globe trotting, road tripping needs. Please feel free to spread the word to your communities so this map can keep growing and getting better.

Have a publicly accessible piece you’d like to share? Awesome- you can get details about Burner Art Safari, get a link to the map, and register your piece on the website: https://burnerartsafari.org/

DO NOT Trespass– please don’t waltz on to anyone’s property uninvited. Stay in your car/on the street/sidewalk. If you happen to see someone, feel free to wave and thank ‘em- just don’t go ringing doorbells or charging them for conversation. The people and projects that are interested in interaction will tell you- ASK FIRST.

DO NOT Touch The Art– This is not an invitation to go messing with people’s art. If the art was meant to be interacted with, they’ll let ya know.

PHOTOGRAPHY- If you see a sign near the art specifically asking you not to take pictures, don’t.

VIRTUAL BURN

This year, community members present a virtual burn portal site that will link out to the various activities happening, such as:

– Anything else you can digitally dream up!

The theme was voted on by the community… So, naturally, it’s NSFW. At least it’s clear this ain’t no corporate sponsored event! We are so eager to play with you!
