November Announce: Date Change, Volunteering, Events, and More

Howdy Flipolians!

THE MOST IMPORTANT DATE INFO: This month’s Announce features some of the biggest news we’ve had in a while. (Many of) you spoke. The org listened. Based on broad feedback from participants (including safety volunteers), and much pondering of possible dates to consider (with conflicts for any one), Burning Flipside 2025 will be moving…in time, not space. Mark your calendars and make your preparations for APRIL 24-28, 2025. Load-In to our temporary township will be April 19 and Load-Out to the default world will be May 3.

EXCITED ABOUT THE NEW DATE? PARTICIPATE! Flipside runs on lots of things, but our most precious resource is your time and effort. Below are some of the open volunteer positions we need to fill, and YOU might be perfect for one. Art needs wranglers for our creatives, Safety needs someone (likely several someones) to hold perimeter, and here are some more specific needs:

  • Area Facilitator (AF) for 360/24/7: coordinates with volunteers who help keep our warehouse (Lloyd) and the gear in it organized and ready for the next event.
  • Lieutenant (LT) AF for Communications: helps the Comms AF organize and develop processes for social media, email outreach, and website updates; steps in when the AF is unavailable.
  • Edjumication Lead: recently moved to Comms, this lead helps newbies and old skoolers alike understand our community principles before and during the event.
  • Site Operations (Site Ops) mega-list:
    • Cartelle LT – helps the (living abroad) Cartelle Lead build and lead a small team to manage/receive/clean volunteer golf carts, work with Flipside leads to determine cart needs, and help manage volunteer shift changes. Requires early entry and late stay arrangements.
    • Pre-Ops LT – helps the (living abroad) Pre-Ops Lead coordinate with the Transpo Lead for City Load-In (April 19), build and lead a team to set up city infrastructure (shade, etc.) onsite, and bring it all back for Load-Out (May 3). May require early entry and late stay arrangements.
    • Fuel LT – helps the Fuel Lead to ensure smooth delivery of gasoline and diesel to city infrastructure as needed. Get dirty! Drive a flammable cart! Early entry and late stay are helpful.
    • Site Lighting LT – (was Safety Lighting) build and lead a small team to set up and tear down all infrastructure site lighting in the city. Work with the Power team to ensure lighting is powered. Requires early entry and late stay arrangements.
    • Power Lead – build and lead a small team to set up and maintain all power requirements in the city. Work with the vendor, Flipside board, and leads to determine power needs. Experience with event power is very helpful. Requires early entry and late stay arrangements.

MORE FROM SITE OPS: Site Ops will learn ya that there is no “they,” only “us.” Requires early entry and late stay arrangements means we would like to have your body or a body that you arrange as your replacement to be on site and working the days before Flipside and the day after. Everyone who is on site for early and late needs to be approved by the Site Ops AF. If you’re interested in seeing the guts of Flipside and want to get your hands dirty building the city, keeping it running, and taking it apart, talk to Bossy Spice, the Site Ops AF, at siteops-af@burningflipside.org, or talk to Poolboy, the Site Ops AF LT at davidthepoolboy@gmail.com.

DaFT SELECTION COMMITTEE REMINDER: The DaFT Selection Committee would like to remind you that the deadline to submit your effigy proposal is the day after Thanksgiving this year (11:59pm CST on November 29). If you have any questions or are looking for any assistance, be sure to reach out as soon as possible. The deadline is very firm this year, so if you have any questions or need any feedback be sure to reach out as soon as possible!

VERY IMPORTANT ART FUNDING INFO: Do you love art? Do you believe Flipside wouldn’t be the event you love without art? Wanna help there be more art at Flipside? Then Ignition Philter (the 501(c)(3) that funds art for Flipside and more) wants you!

What we’re seeking: people who are passionate about helping artists create their dreams, and do so in a fiscally secure and transparent way. This is an unpaid position. COMBUSTION CHAMBER SEEKS NEW MEMBERS: Are you passionate about Flipside, its community, and its principles? Do you enjoy listening to/discussing/debating the finer points of Community with your friends/camp mates/fellow burners? Are your ears open to what the community is saying about Flipside? Would you enjoy talking about crucial matters in this community throughout the year? Do you know someone else who fits this description? The Combustion Chamber is seeking new members. If you are interested in joining or know someone who should, please take a brief moment to submit your application or a nomination at https://www.burningflipside.com/contact/cc-nomination.

The Burning Flipside Combustion Chamber (CC) is a set of eyes and ears for the community. Do you have a concern? Wonder why something happens the way it does? If we don’t know, we’ll find out or at least point you to the person who can answer your question. We also act as a sounding board for the event organizers (aka the Catalyst Collective board). Combustion Chamber membership is not limited specifically to those that live in the Austin area, but members do need to attend meetings regularly in person. If you’re in another city, but down for a monthly road trip, feel free to apply. We welcome the participation of all Flipizens. We want you to share your traditions, games, art and ideas with us. This is an event for the community, by the community and we need your help with: sides, desserts, art, borrowed holiday deco, ideas, themed performances, DJs, music, volunteers for set up, tear down, and help leading party logistics. March Announce: Tickets, Art, Registrations, and Upcoming Events!

UPDATED (4/15/2024) The deadline for registering for theme camps and art projects has been pushed from April 15th to April 18th.

Tickets wants to thank the overwhelming supermajority of cosmic critters who submitted correct ticket paperwork and payment (no personal checks!) for 2024. We (you, me, and that carnival weirdo over there) created 1,354 ticket requests representing 2,154 possible tickets. As of March 5, our intrepid ticket team processed that into 1,917 actual going-to-Flipside tickets. ANNOUNCING the start of the Burning Flipside 2024 season

Happy September! And a hearty welcome back to the hot and dry to all of you pouring back into Texas and other homes! Burning Man has come to a close, and we know what that means. Burning Flipside is getting ready to launch this coming year’s planning season.

FALL TOWN HALL The Catalyst Collective is wrapping up the reporting from last year’s event, right in time for the Combustion Chamber to host our annual Fall Town Hall on September 30 at Lloyd the Warehouse (3106 Industrial Terrace, Austin, TX 78758). Fall Town Hall is a great place to catch up on the latest news, show off some costumes, schmooze with your buds, and especially vote on the theme for next Flipside!  Set up and tailgating start at noon! Many hands make light work.

VOLUNTEER CORNER Know how Burning Flipside runs? It’s an ALL-VOLUNTEER org.  And the time to start is now!

Area Facilitators: We currently have two open Area Facilitator (AF) roles we’re looking to fill: Genesis and Site Signoff. Genesis encompasses Greeters, Zone Czars, Parking, & Towing and Site Signoff makes sure we put all our toys away and leave the land even better than we found it.

Both AF roles involve some project coordination, volunteer management and written communication skills, but you might be surprised by how applicable your theme camp, art project, line volunteer, or default world experiences could be!

THE END IS NIGH: Flipside 2023 Load-Out!

Greetings Citizens of Pyropolis!

Flipside has ended and wasn’t it awesome? We discoed, we demoed, and a few of us even derbied.

Yet there is still work to be done! Load-Out is THIS Saturday, June 3rd, at 10am, on land. We’ll need many hands to help load event infrastructure, de-MOOP, etc. Park your car, find the waiver wrangler to sign a site waiver, and help make sure all the things we brought out get back home. Bring your water bottles and gloves and let’s get moving!

Starting around 12pm at the warehouse (3106 Industrial Terrace, ATX) we can use hands to help *unload* trucks. We always have a significant drop-off of volunteers for this part, so any help is super appreciated!

Burning Flipside RUNS on volunteers!

You’ve read it before and you’ll read it again…Burning Flipside is an all-volunteer event (save a few outside services). Come visit this space often; info will be added as it is received. Below are just a few of the ways you can volunteer. Event shifts can be found at here. X out the departments you are not interested in (and select the ones you want) so you don’t have to wade through every department/every shift.

Work weekend 4! May 12-14 on the land. May 13 is the work day. This is a campout if you choose to spend the night. Contact Michele at wwcomm@burningflipside.com

Load In Day! Saturday May 20 Truck loading starting at 10am. After Work Weekends, the first thing you can sign up to help with is Load In Day! After loading up trucks and sending them on their way, you get to see the land in its near-pristine state, before we start living all over it. Sign up here (different link than the above). If you’d like to sign up to DRIVE a truck (please have experience driving a 24′ diesel box truck), contact siteops@burningflipside.com.

Greeters is a great “entry-level” activity for first-time volunteers! No heavy lifting! Short (3-4hr) shifts! Variety of activities possible! Terrific opportunity to make a lasting impression on the community!

Zone Czars What do Zone Czars do? We help direct theme camps to their designated areas, holler at RV’s trying to go places they really shouldn’t be, point at things, and say ‘that way’ a lot. It’s a great way to meet people and get a lay of the land. Our training is simple and on-site, you’ll be sitting in the shade (as best as we can facilitate) for most of your shift, we provide snacks and ice cold water, and you get a cool bandana to show off to your friends! We have 4-hour shifts on Wednesday and Thursday. If don’t have a login or have any questions, you can email  flipsidezoneczar@gmail.com for more help. ~Willow, InterZone Lead

Ice – The coolest job on the Pecan Playa, sign up to work at ICE, either customer facing or up in the truck throwing ice! Longer ice post is on its way! In the meantime, sign up for a shift!

Shaven Apes KANIHEPYA? Shaven Apes is the volunteer corps who help participants set up their camps and art and helps them tear it down again. Meet other burners! Many fun shifts available!!

Earth Guardians Mad about MOOP? Just looking for a way to lend a hand? We still need an Earth Guardians lead! The Earth Guardian lead is responsible for Leave No Trace and Sustainability education and action for the event. For more info on what that looks like or to throw your hat in the ring, email the Site Signoff AF, Groovy at sitesignoff@burningflipside.com.

DaFT needs fluffers! Our fluffer checks in while we’re building, makes sure we have full ice water and Gatorade, checks with builders to be sure they’re rested, hydrated, eating, and wearing sunscreen.  This is great for somebody that can’t or doesn’t want to build but wants to help us out! We need on site help! If you’re interested in joining us to assemble the structure at the event, we’d love to have you.  It’s alright if you haven’t built with us at the warehouse, there are phases on site that having more hands is helpful. Stop by the effigy when you can. Sign up to help clean up the burn scar during cleanup 6/3, shifts in the volunteer system.

Perimeter Guardians Calling all Introverts, neurospicy friends, and general misanthropic personages! Do you need at least 4 hours break time from constantly being “on” at flipside? Come join the Perimeter Guardians Team where you and a friend can make a difference by sitting in a remote location dissociating into the middle distance for the betterment of the burn! Our Shadow team helps us by keeping an eye out for potential trespassers and reporting what they see, while our Digital team responds to calls and supports our shadows during shift changes and breaks!

This is a great opportunity to take a 4 hour break from the burn, including on burn night, where the volume of the effigy and fireworks can be a bit much for some of us, but that’s also when we need you the most! Email guardians@burningflipside.com,  check out “Guardians of flipside” on facebook, or look for kerberus at Safety HQ for more information!

Sanctuary provides emotional support for distressed and overwhelmed Flipizens.  We have 3 levels of volunteers; Listeners (two 6 hour shifts), Shift Leads, (two 6 hour shifts) and MHAs: Licensed Counselors and psych Nurses (one 12 hour on-call shift).  Required training includes Sanctuary Basics (1.5 hours), Active Listening (2 hours), Radio (20 min) and ICS (30 min to 1 hour).

Load Out Day! Saturday June 3  Commit NOW, add it to your calendar, and come on out  to help us finish cleaning up and sending all the rest of our stuff back to the warehouse. November Announce: Art and Volunteering!

Hey, y’all! It’s November. And you know what that means? It’s time to ramp up all the behind-the-scenes creating and volunteering! With that in mind, here are several leaping off points!

Effigy Design Proposal Time

We’re well on our way to building Burning Flipside 2023! Fall Town Hall has come and gone, we have a THEME (Demolition Disco Derby), and now we need our effigy designers to step up and propose their DaFT magic!

Make sure you read through the guidelines before you do anything else so you have a good handle on expectations.

Are you full of great ideas but never built or designed an effigy before? No problem! Our wonderful group of previous effigy builders are happy to share a brain and provide feedback as you design your art.

The deadline to have as much of your proposal as you can possibly gather ready and submitted is November 24th (Thanksgiving).

STicket Season Begins Soon

Sticker + Ticket = STicket!  Want to help define how Flipside 2023 will be remembered?  Create some art to beautify the ticket everyone gets. Or, create some art to just totally nail the theme home on the sticker that comes with the ticket. Or, submit art for both.  Just don’t sit there and NOT create something.

We will be announcing the selection process and timeframes soon.  While you ponder the deeper meanings of Demolition Disco Derby, read the submission guidelines here on details like size, color, and things per inch.

Ignition Philter – Fall Fundraiser moves to Spring

Ignition Philter here (your friendly non-profit that grants funds for Flipside artists). Due to un-resolvable conflicts, we have decided to postpone the planned in-person fall art fundraiser event (until spring 2023).

If you would like to use this space/ time to contribute funds for art at next year’s Flipside, we always accept donations. You might consider this our “online fall fundraiser request”.

HANDS NEEDED for Load In! Sat 21st May, all-day at Lloyd, the Flipside Warehouse: 3106 Industrial Terr, Austin TX 78758 and Apache Pastures

This is the day we load everything OUT of the warehouse and IN to the land. We especially need folks who can help out on land on Saturday. It’s a great opportunity to see the land empty, be part of making the thing happen, get a look at where your camp might be (camp placement subject to change), or scout the shady spots in the badlands. And get a fabulous Pre-Post t-shirt for your effort. It includes Flagging and City Signage set up on property. EVENT Volunteers Still Needed! Shifts Tuesday, May 23- Monday, May 30

How are you participating in making it go? There’s everything from Greeters to Safety Teams, from Ice to Apes! There are all sorts of shifts available – different lengths and different departments! There’s even a Volunteer Assistance Squad to help take care of other volunteers!

Go to https://secure.burningflipside.com/fvs/index.php, log in, and select Event> Burning Flipside 2022. You can clear the clutter by removing “Filled Shifts” and departments you aren’t volunteering for.
